Project Description and Reflection
The central problem for this unit included a decision that a city needed to make about land use. Using a system of linear equations and inequalities we could find the answer to the central problem. We were introduced to graphing equations in three variables, solving linear equations in three variables, and matrix operations to solve multivariable systems of equations. We used the calculator to manipulate matrices to find the central answer to the unit problem. Over this unit, we learned new key ideas to help us find the answers to each step towards the answer to the entire unit question. The answer to the central question is cost=$353,750.
Throughout this unit, I was reminded of my experience in the “Cookies” unit from Sophomore year and it affected my work in “Meadows or Malls.” This unit was an extension of the “Cookies” problem and the feasible regions. When we were finding the points using the systems of linear equations for plain and iced cookies we were asked to use the system of linear equations again for this unit with the farm, army base, and the mining land. The new mathematical topic that I learned was matrices and how to manipulate them using the calculator. Geometry was addressed many times in this unit. When we were finding feasible regions and finding points we were using geometry. The strategies I have to solve systems of equations involving matrices A-1 x B on the calculator. This unit was challenging and informative.
