Project Reflection
11/10/2017
This project was long and we did a lot of things. The first step we took was being introduced to "The Hero's Journey." We read many articles, created posters, and watched a movie that clearly showed the steps of the journey to help us completely understand. Next, we read an article on the “Shadow’s Journey” as well as an article on the “Rites of Passages” and learned about the other side to this theory and different theories, other than Campbell’s. After we were able to gather information of the journey, we read a book called, The Alchemist. This book was very helpful to me in many ways. We read this book and then discussed it through the seminar in order to make sure the class was on the same page in understanding. We then read Siddhartha. It was also helpful to me and the class discussed again. Once we had gathered all of this background information, we were introduced to our exhibition and the idea of storytelling. We listened to stories on “The MOTH” to help us see what our own stories may seem like and how to format them. We then brainstormed and started to develop our own stories. As a class, we critiqued and helped our peers. We told our stories over and over to get it just right. Finally, we recorded and transcribed our stories in order to prepare for exhibition. At the exhibition, some students told their stories and others had them on recording for people to listen to.
I grew in many ways during this project. I came to the realization that storytelling and making connections through these stories are a beneficial way to connect to others. I also grew as a presenter because I told my story on stage. I was very nervous, but I was pushed by my peers and teacher, and it caused me to grow. Right before the exhibition, I had my name in the hat, and I took my name out and put it back in a couple of times. I thought that I should not tell it, but I then felt guilty, like I was letting my peers and teacher down. I finally put my name back in the hat and I was the first student to get called on stage to tell my story. So I am glad that I kept my name in the hat last minute because afterwards, I felt supported and proud of myself. Now, I am a more confident presenter. I am glad that I took a risk and stepped out of my comfort zone and I would not take it back.
The most enduring understanding that I will take away from this project is the power of storytelling. During the exhibition, one of the community members was able to make a connection with one of the previous storytellers. Both of them had been through the same difficult stage in their lives: depression. He was able to realize that and make the connection and that really stood out to me because I know that it comforted and was supporting to that previous storyteller. While I was listening to some of the stories, I was able to relate and understand them, and I think that is a very important realization. The point of storytelling is to make people laugh or cry or just understand because they may know what it is like. Connections are the heart of storytelling.
